Kitty Viscardi Memorial Scholarship Application

The Kitty Viscardi Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior who has been an active member of the SHS Speech & Debate Team during high school. Kitty Viscardi, who passed away in 2005, was the Speech & Debate Team coach at SHS for many years. She believed that participating in Speech & Debate made all her students winners, regardless of any trophies they brought home from a given tournament. One of her favorite expressions at the end of a competition was, “You were all winners the moment you stepped on that bus this morning.” The Kitty Viscardi Memorial Scholarship seeks to honor a student whose involvement on the team embodies Mrs. V’s dedication as well as her conviction that the greatest rewards come from simply participating. Applicants must be planning to attend a two or four year accredited college or university.

Please write a short essay (3-5 paragraphs) to explain how you have exemplified Mrs. Viscardi’s philosophy (“You were all winners the moment you stepped on that bus this morning.”) as a member of the Shrewsbury Speech & Debate Team. Please also include with your application:

n The name, email address, and home address of a current Shrewsbury Speech & Debate teammate who has agreed to respond to a peer reference in support of your scholarship application. (We will contact him/her directly to complete the peer reference; please ask your friend to serve as your peer reference before sending us his/her name and contact information.)

n A letter of recommendation from an academic teacher (a copy of a college recommendation is acceptable).

The Kitty Viscardi Memorial Scholarship will be presented at the SHS Alumni Association Scholarship Presentation on Wednesday, April 25^th. The scholarship recipient will be notified by mail on or around April 15^th.
