name: Sunanda Sharma Learned from project: I have learned that money, when spent judiciously,
can be used to effectively cover many expenses. Also, going through the application process made me realize the resources
which are available, and how to receive them. Though at the beginning of the year, the Speech and Debate team had minimal
funds, we have still been able to attend tournaments and host our own, thanks to this grant and student and parent involvement.
Accomplishments: The money that we received from this grant was spent, along with
other funds, to pay for expenses such as decorations, food, and trophies for Shrewsbury High School's annual Mardi Gras
Tournament. The fact that we were able to host a tournament with such success attests to the fact that our goals were indeed
accomplished, and we thank the Alumni Association for its help. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

date submitted: 4/17/2009 project name: Criticism
Counts project dates: Oct. 2008 - March 2009 contact name: Claire Donovan Learned from project: Although
I have always been convinced that collaboration is essential to maximize the effects of education, this project reinforced
that belief many times over. This grant sought to connect the English Department and media center staff to begin
the discussion about and implementation of projects incorporating literary criticism. Funds provided by the Alumni Grant helped
to purchase materials to support these projects. Several projects especially those involving our senior students
were successfully completed and demonstrated the value of introducing students to the techniques of literary criticism.
Accomplishments: The media center staff met informally
with English teachers who were attempting to incorporate a literary criticism component into their students' research
and writing.
The media specialist worked with English teachers to design research
projects involving literary criticism. The media specialist purchased materials to
support these projects with grant funds. Students successfully completed research
papers that included literary criticism. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

project
name: Team Building for Senior Crew Team Members project dates: April 23, 2009 contact name: Pam Krause Learned from project: We have learned that the senior members of
the crew team have become a closer knit group by partaking in trips like this one. They work better together, which
is especially important for a crew team. In the fall we had a bonding weekend in New Hampshire the night before
the New Hampshire Championships. It strengthened our team's camraderie, and the good will filtered down to
the younger athletes. We originally wanted to continue with the overnight plan for the seniors before our One-in-Eight
Regatta on Cape Cod on May 3. Because of the grant's timeline, we changed our original plan to have the seniors
go to dinner together at Wright's Family Restaurant in Burrellville, Rhode Island. The dinner was a success,
and strengthened the team even more. The boys and girls teams have worked well together this season, a slight change
from recent years past, led by this outstanding group of senior athletes.
Accomplishments:
Even though we have a girls and a boys crew team, this project brought the whole team together as one. In
the past, there was a gap between the older athletes and the younger oarsmen, the girls side and the boys. It has
been important to this coaching staff to get the teams working together to build a stronger program, and responsible young
adults. Doing team building activities with the older students gave them tools to work with to bring the younger
group in line with them. All work together co-operatively to get ready for races now, to implement the overall
training plan, and build a stronger team. This bonding/activity has also inspired this group to actively work together
to also encourage middle school students to join the team, to carry on the tradition of Shrewsbury Crew.
At the dinner, facilitated by your generous grant, rowers shared their perspectives on what crew meant to them
and their development, not only as an athlete, but as an active member of school and the community. They also ate
a lot of food! This weekend, we will continue this work with the girls, who will stay overnight before the Cape
race. The boys will join us in the morning. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Legend of Vampires project dates: August 2008-April 2009 contact name: Krystin Edlinger Learned from project: I have learned a tremendous amount over the course of this project,
both about myself as a person, and about my topic. I started my research with a lot of prior knowledge, but as things turned
out, I found a nearly overwehlming reservoir of information that replaced a lot of things I thought I knew (particularly about
medieval folklore), and added on to any prior knowledge (such as learning about modern sub-culturesbased on the vampires,
and about the real science that both supports and denies some legends about vampires).
Accomplishments:
I feel that I have mostly met all of my goals, though my central focus did steer a bit away form focusing on literature.
Nevertheless, I feel I've met my goal primarily through extensive research-- and many, many books that were exceptionally
hard to get my hands on-- and in depth conversations with other people and their feelings on things like the supernatural.
I've doen even more reading of vampire literature and have exposed myself to an even wider range of ideas, all of which
are parts of the grand picture of what we, as humans, have thought and now think a vampire to be. All in all, when I look
back at my original goals, I am utterly and completely satisfied. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- date submitted: May 2, 2009 project name: Senior Exhibition:
Conquering Concussions 2009 project dates: April 27, 2009 contact name: Demi McLaren Learned from project: I have learned how to successfully create awareness of head
injuries in the community in order to assure the safety of student athletes.
Accomplishments: In
my research, I discovered several methods to protect student athletes; whether it be a cognitive computerized assessment to
monitor a safe recovery, or equipment that can be used to minimize injuries while playing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
